Tour Hotel: Holiday Inn Express, 3154 Navarre Road, Oregon, Ohio
The Canal Society of Ohio will explore a number of prime attractions in the Toledo metropolitan area. We will take a boat tour on the Maumee River and follow this with lunch at the original Tony Packo's Restaurant. The afternoon will be spent at the ever expanding National Museum of the Great lakes where there is the museum as well as a lake freighter and a lake tugboat to explore.
Friday Sept, 29th: 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Registration is at the Holiday Inn Express the hotel lobby.
7:00pm "Tour Preview" held in a hotel meeting room of the next day's activities.
Saturday Sept, 30th: 6:00am to 7:30am. Self service breakfast will be available in the hotel's nook.
7:45am to 8:I5am. Final check-in in the Holiday Inn Express lobby for those previously registered who did not arrive on Friday.
8:15am to 9:15 am. Tutorial will be presented on routes of the canal in Toledo.
9:15am to I0:00 am. Carpool to the Sandpiper boat dock in downtown Toledo.
10:00am to 12:00pm. A narrated boat ride on the Maumee River entitled "Discover the River" will take place aboard-the Sandpiper excursion boat.
12:15pm to 12:45. We will carpool to lunch.
12:45pm to 2:00 pm. Lunch at the original Tony Packo' s.
2:00pm to 5:00pm. Carpool to and visit the National Museum of the Great Lakes, the SS Col. James M. Schoonmaker lake freighter, and the SS Ohio tugboat.
6:30pm. Catered dinner at the Holiday Inn Express meeting room. Our speaker will be Julia Wiley, a local attorney, who is President of the Fallen Timbers Battlefield Preservation Commission. She will talk on "Wayne's Traitors: a Many-Headed Monster of Conspiracy and Deceit" regarding the interplay between General Wayne and General Wilkinson in the context of the Battle of Fallen Timbers.
Sunday October, 1: 9:00am to 12:15pm. For those that are interested, there will be a tour of the Maumee Sidecut, which features four restored canal locks. Time permitting we will also go to Ward's Canal, a nineteenth century industrial canal which empties into Lake Erie which was recently highlighted in the Spring, 2022 Towpaths article.

Hotel Reservations:
Making reservations are the responsibility of the individual and can be made by calling the hotel. A block of 25 rooms has been secured in the name of the Canal Society of Ohio at the Holiday Inn Express. Call the Holiday Inn at 3154 Navarre Road at 1-691-8800 by September 22, 2022. To make a reservation, mention the Canal Society of Ohio. Rates are: $119 per night for singles or doubles (plus tax).
Hotel Location:
The hotel is at 3154 Navarre Road (State Route 2) in the Oregon area. It is east of I-280 once you use exit 7 to leave that freeway. A Big Lots store (address 3010 Navarre Road) is very obvious on the south side of the road and the hotel is approximately two tenths of a mile further on the same side of the street. It is located in the Peter Navarre Shopping Center and is a multistory building located some distance back from the street.
