The CSO is the “Grand Daddy” of the Ohio canal organizations.. The early members were primarily from the northeast region of Ohio but it soon became evident that kindred souls from various areas of the state had similar interests. Within a short time the concept of a statewide society was validated.

In subsequent years numerous local and regional canal groups have emerged, resulting in increased public interest and support. The CSO, with its primary mission of preservation of the canals and their history, applauds these developments, which we could only have dreamed of forty years ago. With the Internet we can share information with all of these groups through the electronic links found in this website.

The spring and fall tours are weekend events focused on a specific area or segment of the canals. On Friday evening there is a brief orientation followed by a bus tour on Saturday. In the evening there is a dinner with an after- dinner presentation. A canal walk on Sunday morning concludes the tour. The tour package includes a detailed tour guide.
These tours are a great way to learn about Ohio history.

Three times a year the Board of Trustees conducts a “Minitour” prior to its meeting on Saturday afternoon. These tours are held in the morning in various parts of the state. All members are invited to the luncheon and board meeting.

In addition to planned activities many member are interested in canal history, research, photography and writing. The CSO encourages members to utilize the extensive text and photo archives that are available to them. This material is available in the archives of the University of Akron and Wright State University.
